Sculptra is an injectable collagen stimulator containing poly-L-lactic acid, also known as PLLA. It encourages your skin to produce collagen, a protein that helps give skin its structure and firmness. As collagen develops, treatment can help improve facial fullness and soften the appearance of wrinkles and folds.
After Sculptra is injected into the appropriate tissue layer, its PLLA particles stimulate a response that encourages new collagen formation. This develops gradually, helping reinforce the skin’s supporting structure.
The PLLA is biodegradable and is absorbed over time. The treatment’s longer-term effect comes from the tissue response and collagen produced, which is why results are assessed over a course of appointments.
Sculptra may be considered by patients who would like gradual improvements in facial fullness and skin firmness. At your consultation, we can assess concerns such as:
Sculptra encourages collagen production beneath the skin, helping support its structure as improvements develop.
Sculptra treatment can help restore fullness to areas of the face affected by volume loss.
Collagen stimulation can help improve skin firmness and the appearance of facial wrinkles, including in the cheek area.
The gradual response allows improvements to emerge over a course of treatment, with progress assessed between appointments.
Clinical studies have demonstrated improvements lasting up to two years.
Your clinician will recommend treatment areas, product quantities and a schedule based on your assessment and the outcome you would like to achieve.
Hyaluronic acid fillers use a gel to add volume in selected areas, often with a more immediate effect. Sculptra contains PLLA and works primarily by stimulating collagen, so its results develop gradually. The treatments serve different purposes; your clinician can explain which approach suits your concerns.
A course of around two-three sessions over a few months is commonly recommended. The number of sessions and amount of product depend on the areas being treated and your response. Your clinician will explain the proposed course and review your progress before recommending further treatment.
Visible changes may begin from around one month and continue to develop as collagen builds. Results can last up to two years.
Sculptra may be considered for the cheeks and other suitable areas of the mid and lower face, including certain facial folds. It is not intended for injection into the lips or around the eyes. Your clinician will assess the areas that can be treated appropriately.
Swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness may occur afterwards and often settle within several days. Allow time for these effects to resolve before an important event.
Your clinician will discuss the risks, alternatives and warning signs before you decide whether to proceed.
Sculptra is not suitable for everyone. Allergies to its ingredients and a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring can rule out treatment. Active skin infection or inflammation may require treatment to be postponed. Your medical history, medicines and previous aesthetic treatments will also be reviewed.
You will receive instructions tailored to your treatment. These may include massaging the treated areas for five minutes, five times a day, for five days, as directed by your clinician. Avoid excessive sun and UV exposure while redness or swelling persists, and follow your clinician’s advice on skincare and returning to activities.
Bring details of your medicines, supplements, allergies and previous aesthetic treatments, and tell your doctor about any new health concerns or changes to your skin. You will receive preparation advice for your own treatment plan.
Your doctor will explain the procedure and check that you are comfortable with the agreed plan before starting. The areas treated and the amount of product are tailored to your assessment.
Preparation and comfort
The treatment areas are prepared and cleaned. Your doctor will discuss appropriate pain relief, which may include local or topical anaesthetic, depending on the plan.
